You’d be hard pressed to find an eighth grader who hasn’t ever put something down as being “gay.” With a good education and some practical experience, most will grow out of it. But what about the kids who slip through the cracks?
The Canadian Center for Gender and Sexual Diversity has a novel, knitted approach to the problem. To highlight the absurdity of calling decidedly not gay things “gay,” they set out to produce the “world’s first and only ‘gay’ object.” Yes, they knitted a sweater out of 100 percent bona fide homosexual hair from over 100 donors.
And it’s about to make its debut at Toronto fashion week, so book your tickets now, folks.
“We want the conversation that surrounds the gay sweater to inspire those who are using ‘gay’ in a detrimental way to both realize the negative impact their words and actions are having and change their behavior,” said Jeremy Dias, director of the CCGSD.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
But enough talk, here are some pictures of it:
And here’s a video for the project:

Horrible sweater. To bad something that’s “100% Gay” isn’t nicer-looking.

How many wigs could have been made from that? It’s freaking tragic.

I think it’s adorable!

Weird, I think the hair would have better used to make wigs for chemo patients.

I don’t think it would be very comfortable. Kind of itchy.

This thing wasn’t created for looks or for comfort. It was created to share a message and I think its a good one.
